What is Spiritual Direction?

Spiritual direction considers that God is at work in every area of our lives - our relationships, our work, our play and quiet. As whole people our spiritual, physical, mental and emotional lives are present in all of these areas, working and supporting each other. God is present in our doubt and frustration and pain as well as in our certainty, our joy, and our healing, but it can be difficult sometimes to discern the Spirit’s presence or movement. God is the real Director of our lives, but an experienced companion (spiritual director) can often help you take a long, loving look at what is real and respond.

A Spiritual Director / Companion is a person who is on the journey with you. They create a space for reflecting and noticing and can guide you through spiritual practices where you can find rest and transformation for your soul.

Who is Spiritual Direction for?

Spiritual direction is for anyone who is seeking to deepen their spiritual life. It has been found to be especially helpful for those who are in leadership roles, to have a place where they can confide and seek out practices to help sustain their faith.

“The whole purpose of spiritual direction is to penetrate beneath the surface of a person’s life, to get behind the façade of conventional gestures and attitudes which they presents to the world, and to bring out their inner spiritual freedom, their inmost truth, which is what we call the likeness of Christ in their soul.”

—Thomas Merton
